چکیده

Earthquake is one of the most commonly happened disasters with devastating consequences and poses significant risks to human society. The ability to determine the time and location of an earthquake can provide valuable information for rescue guidance, hazard assessment and scientific study. After a destructive earthquake, an accurate earthquake location is the most importtance information needed for rescue. Earthquakes also provide valuable information for scientists to study our Earth: the movement of plates, the property of rock in Earth’s interior and local geological background.

Application of the rule extraction method to evaluate seismicity of Iran

Assessing seismic hazards involves specifying the likelihood, magnitude and location of earthquakes in a region. Predicting the seismic hazards is the first step in reducing the impact of the damage caused by an earthquake.  In this study, to fully utilize all the known parameters which may possibly affect the occurrence of earthquakes (mb ≥ 4.5); a data-driven rule-extraction method called the...

Real-time earthquake monitoring using a search engine method

When an earthquake occurs, seismologists want to use recorded seismograms to infer its location, magnitude and source-focal mechanism as quickly as possible. If such information could be determined immediately, timely evacuations and emergency actions could be undertaken to mitigate earthquake damage. Current advanced methods can report the initial location and magnitude of an earthquake within...

Absolute Earthquake Locations with Differential Data

Not withstanding the commonly-held wisdom that “you can’t determine the absolute location of earthquakes using the double-difference method”, you can. We present a way of visualizing double-difference data, and use it to show how differential arrival time data can, in principle, be used to determine the absolute locations of earthquakes. We then analyze the differential form of Geiger’s Method,...

Earthquake Likelihood Model Testing

The Regional Earthquake Likelihood Models (RELM) project aims to produce and evaluate alternate models of earthquake potential (probability per unit volume, magnitude, and time) for California. Based on differing assumptions, these models are produced both to test the validity of their assumptions and explore which models should be incorporated in seismic hazard and risk evaluation. Tests based...

Curvature Method to Detect Location and Depth of a Plastic Zone in Frame Members during an Earthquake

This paper presents a new method for detecting beam and frame damage caused by an earthquake. Despite comprehensive investigations on structural damage detection, which mostly have focused on damage detection of elastic structures, the present study deals with nonlinear damage detection in structures. Furthermore, in the proposed method, only measurements of the damaged structures during an ear...
